What do they do on Twitter?

Most Twitter users go on there to complain! This is in fact one of the main reasons you should be on Twitter - to track your brand to ensure you are receiving all the customer and influencer feedback that is out there. Twitter offers an easy and valuable way of identifying and keeping on top of customer issues.

What is the best way to use Twitter?

Given that most people use Twitter to complain, it is important that when you tweet you have something meaningful, authentic and helpful to say.  Self promotional fluff doesn't wash with followers.

Gaining followers on Twitter

One of the easiest and most effective means of attracting followers is through following others. Generally 50% of the people you follow will follow you back. You can increase this percentage by making sure you tweet every day- this will create the perception that you offer an active, real account worth following. Also, make sure you have an easy name with your biography/website/ LinkedIn profile linked to your account, this makes it easier to follow you and allows followers to personally identify with you.

Corporate Tweeters

If a number of you are tweeting for the one company, you should try and differentiate each tweeter, for example through including initials at the end of each tweet. This helps personalise the approach of the larger corporates or businesses.

Finally, be sure to tweet personally. Others will only really connect with you if they feel they are being approached on a personal level.

The upshot

Twitter can be a valuable marketing tool in Australia. These few basic tips can help make sure you are maximising your followers and providing something of value to the world of tweets.
